Artemisia
reached her acme
long after
Athena
lost the weave-off
to Arachne.
Full of rage,
green with envy,
Athena
destroyed Arachne’s loom
threw her shredded tapestry
across the room,
then turned
the
better weaver
into an eight legged
insect eater.
Entangled
in a woven web,
Arachne makes her own bed,
and lays down
her pretty spider head.
Millennia pass,
then centuries aft
Artemisia‘s name
and work
garner no fame;
yet,
Arachne
earns her place…
she’s a phobia
to
the human race.
