Anhedonia

is the name of a beautiful girl with long dark hair
sitting on a barstool, legs crossed perfectly tanned,
skirt sliding up her thigh. She’s aloof,

somehow approachable, has that look in her eye,
go-ahead-take-a-chance-punch-above-your-weight
the bartender shoots a warning look, a brief shake

of his head. You want to buy her a drink, tell her
your woes, get lost in those pale green doe eyes,
take her home and hide her away from the world.

She’s quiet, powerful, has some wicked gravity;
sucks you into her orbit–as if you want to resist
anyway–and before your last nerve snaps you flag

the barkeep to buy her another; she tilts her head,
looks you up and down and right straight through,
rests her fingers on your forearm, red lips

pout and though you know how it ends your heart
flutters, you sweat, fidget; you’re lost and found,
down for the count and ready to pay for your sins.
