Out of Time

“Out of Time” As read by S. T. Eleu.

the traveler
runs in search of redemption

           yesteryear’s open expanse
offering nothing of note to Future Present
           in the fresh fallen snow

the traveler
digs beneath Arctic layers

           Present Past having no patience
           for apologies, caring even less
for tears, though frozen – for regret, though sincere

the traveler
spies a set of pawprints . . . YES!

           Ursus maritimus
           hypercarnivore, extinct since
           2083

the traveler
bags bone fragments, clumps of fur, broken molars

           frozen blood droplets!
all the DNA needed to recreate
           what dominion stole from existence

the traveler
returns to Future Present with a Future Future vision

           a wooly mammoth
stepping over a polar bear cub
           on Mars
