Never-again People

by John Grey

And that was it.
She left the reading
with two of her college friends
and that was the last I ever saw of her.
A phone call, some emails followed,
but we were never again
in the same place at the same time.

She joined my mother,
my sisters, a couple of friends,
a few acquaintances,
in that same place,
which is really no place.

At least no place where I can
show up and say something like,
“Oh there you are”
or “I’m so happy to see you.”

I still say those same words
but in different places
and to other people.
They seem so innocuous.
They could be eulogies.
