by John Grey
The woman at the next table
is eating meatballs with linguini.
She’s attractive,
but long strands of pasta,
dollops of sauce,
are the great equalizer.
There’s a blob of red
on her pert nose,
a couple of spots
like instant freckles
on her cheeks.
Even that sensuous mouth
is more like a gag reel
than a launching pad
for kisses,
as she tries to slurp
a long, uncooperative
shoelace lookalike
back into her good graces.
Her companion laughs
and so does she.
Her beauty is restored.
A sense of humor
is a napkin twice over.
