The Eclipse Winks in the Soul

The eclipse winks in the soul

and strikes the water like the ring of a golden bell,
streaks of white-blind light piercing through the sky
like fiery spears. the sun is a stark hole
cut haphazardly into the horizon—
a ring of unnatural silence around

the dark side of the moon.
naked clouds of solarity hang over grass.
bands of solid shadows flit over the lake
and dance over dappled tree-tops
like the mute hollow bird.

your heart skips—a milky corona crowning the
blackness of the moon. five seconds until totality. 5. 4. 3. 2.
a shiver runs through eerie skin
like an electric shock. your eyes
tremble through pinhole cameras. breath is

raw and beautiful. it catches in your throat as you
soak in the sun’s shadow. it strips you down
until you are bare aching atoms. face is
strangled with gasping emotion. heaven and earth
made 1.
