Maui

“Maui” by Rosalie Hendon

The ocean came and kissed my toes
The sea foam formed a shape
like the top of a heart

If I had clicked my heels together,
splayed my feet in a V
we could have made it complete

Last night the sun fell slowly,
then quick at the end
like it was in a hurry to go to sleep,
like I hurry to brush my teeth,
wash my face and beat you to bed
Those last few seconds
it fell behind a mountain
searing disc of light
still painting the clouds

Walking in darkness on Kihei Road,
I scoop a plumeria blossom from the ground.
It glowed white and perfect in my hand.
This morning in the light
I could see it was black at the edges,
decomposing already and
bruised from the fall
