by Jacqueline Jules
In the once upon a time,
a pampered girl earned a prince
by insisting a pea
poked her delicate torso
through multiple mattresses
and eiderdown quilts.
Lying awake tonight,
mulling a conversation
containing a pinch to my pride
no bigger than a pea under a mattress,
it suddenly seems rather silly
to be a princess, praised
for letting one little bump
in an otherwise comfortable bed
ruin a good night’s sleep.
