sugar like sweet sweet sorrow

“sugar like sweet sweet sorrow” by Anyély Gómez-Dickerson

beneath the landscape of your sugar skin
life remains innocent with a few scars here
& there but smooth to the touch

it is their envy wrapped in hatred
& their cold touch that unfriendly touch
that wants to own your otherness

wants to languish in your brownness
wants to cage your exotic so you don’t wander free
& like a bird that’s never known freedom

you hop from perch to perch blinded by the scents
their smiles & sins trap you & all the while you remain
imprisoned by all the things you tell yourself

by all the things you do & all the things you don’t
& beneath the quiet shadows of life you stay hidden
unaware how to break free, break out

unaware beneath the landscape of your sugar skin
that life can be so good, is good, life can be great
if you learn to feel, see & live the magic

of your sweet sweet sugar skin
& cast off that lingering sweet sweet sorrow
to live in your sweet sweet sugar world
