The host blew a note that caused
the woman to take her foot
off my platter–but that’s not
what started the war. She went up
to him as we were leaving:
She said it feel like summer’s
over soon as you get to July.
Like you had all your fun and all
you can do now is wait. He
nodded and sat with his friends.
I sat by myself and thought
about work. I said it was my
reason for being. It made sense
at the time. Otherwise I’d be
kicking myself for things I did
as a kid. People put the host
down for a lady’s man. He liked
the girls and they liked him.
So what. That’s not what
started the war. The woman
said let’s put that dick away
before you get in trouble.
That didn’t start the war either.
