Atheist

by Ken Anderson

Let’s throw out Good and Bad
—what rowdy guys!—
along with God, their dad. Pleasure and Pain
are a more straightforward pair. They’re fluent
in heart. You’ll live a long life
if you listen
to them.

I asked my mom, one Sunday,
Is there a god?” She answered,
“What would we do
without one?” So, I thought
of what I’d done without
before I’d done with religion. I’d done
without a spoon
of salt
in my cappuccino dry.
